Tim Leonard is an extremely capable and experienced trainer who has run hundreds of training programmes since 1990 for a wide variety of commercial and public sector clients. Previously Tim worked in the IT industry for many years, operating within the Finance, Accounting, Manufacturing and Human Resources functions.
Tim’s initial years in business were spent with IBM, which gave him a deep understanding of how a successful organisation operates. When Tim moved into IBM Training he possessed a passionate drive to demonstrate the effectiveness of his learning programmes and the return on investment they provided.
When his facility at IBM was the subject of a management buy-out in 1994, Tim contributed to the successful transition from IBM to a dynamic, responsive and viable company. During this process, when the Xyratex management team bought the operation at Havant from IBM, the business and its staff faced massive organisational change. Tim was the lead facilitator in imparting the transformational skills required to the management team and Change Champions, and also delivered Business Process Re-engineering workshops for employees to help them understand the new ways of working. Xyratex is now a $1.5 billion company.
Within his training role Tim has been instrumental in creating a range of modular topics to underpin skills required for management qualifications accredited through professional bodies.
Tim’s training style is energetic and enthusiastic, with a drive, determination and focus that are infectious for participants. Delivery is very practical, involving delegates in discussions and drawing out their issues and experiences for the benefit of all. Tim believes people derive more from a course if they enjoy the experience, and that compelling, abiding and deliverable Action Plans are vital to the return on investment that training represents - in his view theory is meaningless without practical application and benefit to the organisation.
Tim’s recent clients include Prysmian Cables (formally Pirelli), Johnson Controls, Hampshire Fire & Rescue, IBM, Xyratex, Mayday NHS Trust, NDS, Wallop Defence, PEI Genesis, London Borough of Bexley, London Borough of Bromley and Hounslow Homes.

Skill Sets Channel Account Managers Need
Being a Channel Account Manager today is highly demanding – as “Trusted Advisors” to their customers, they need to support and guide them to grow sales. The skills needed are complex. Find out what to do differently to stay ahead.

The role of a channel account manager has evolved to become more and more sophisticated. One of the challenges faced by vendors is to find the right calibre of channel account manager. Beyond basic selling skills, channel account managers need to be able to sell different kinds of products to different kinds of partners. Therefore, having the right channel account managers is fundamental. It is no longer a case of hiring someone who knows a few resellers or has experience working in distribution.
Vendors must behave as leaders who enable their channel partners to succeed. They need to build their partners’ success into their business model. The partner community has expressed a desire to work with vendors who have a committed channel programme, a clear vision and market position and who are not afraid of pushing the boundaries. Therefore, vendors have to understand what partners expect from their relationships with channel account managers and strive to meet their demands.
Investing in training is a good solution as long as it provides ROI. The ultimate goal for vendors in providing adequate support for their channel account managers is to win more business, generate more revenue and create more profit both for themselves and for their partners.
Drawing on quotes and anecdotal evidence reflecting the expectations of various resellers and distributors, this whitepaper introduces the three prime attributes needed to be a good channel account manager. The ideal channel account manager is simultaneously:
- a trusted advisor who focuses on the relationship with the partner, not the transaction
- a solutions champion who is not simply a product pusher but considers what products and services will do for a business
- a navigator who functions as a catalyst and linchpin within the organisation, being involved in its internal processes
Having defined these qualities, the whitepaper will outline the different skills needed to develop them and suggest plans and strategies that will help channel account managers achieve their full potential. Read more

Sometimes getting people to do things differently is hard work – especially if there appears, at first, to be an easier option of just carrying on as you’ve done up until now.
This entertaining video shows how with an original idea and the use of music, people were persuaded to take the stairs rather than the escalator. Ask yourself, what would I have done?

All sorts of different queries come in about training and personal development. Here are two that appeared recently in the magazine:
"I am keen to develop a leadership initiative into our organisation. The current structure is very “hierarchical” and I am concerned that the current CEO is from the school of thought that believes “leaders are born, not made” from what he said the other day – what would you suggest to get him on side and to get a programme off the ground?" Read more
“We have a number of women in our company who are very good at what they do but who don’t have the confidence or bravado of some of their male colleagues. What do you suggest to help them be more confident – very often they have great ideas but lack the presentation skills and influencing skills to put these forward..” Read more

Bristow Group Inc is the world’s largest, most reliable and prestigious helicopter service for the oil and gas sector. It is understandably proud of its reputation as a provider of the safest and most efficient helicopter transportation, maintenance, search and rescue, aviation support and training services.
To maintain that reputation Bristow knows how important it is to attract and retain the highest calibre people. To make sure they had the right people in the right places at the right time they needed to make some changes. First, they wanted to ensure that they provided the right development opportunities for their own engineers and secondly they wanted to improve the quality of people management through a more rigorous selection process.
One of their key roles is that of Chief Engineer. In some of their more remote locations, the Chief Engineer is the most senior and sometimes the only manager presence. So not only does he/she need to have first class technical skills he needs to have sound judgement, leadership and technical skills. So first they put in place a programme to identify potential Chief Engineers, secondly they invested in a rigorous assessment process and from that were able to design and deliver a bespoke programme to bring each candidate up to the level of skill required.
Read more about how this was rolled out.

Priming The Probationers

With increasing pressure on the Probation Service to perform and meet stringent targets, the demands on management are many. Furthermore, constant change within the service has induced an element among staff of “change fatigue” - placing yet more pressure.
The aim of the Masterclass programme was to improve the leadership skills and practices within the service so it could deal with change more effectively, and change the management style from transactional (managers telling teams members what to do) to transformational (managers inspiring and motivating team members to perform more effectively).
Using the Kouzes and Posner Leadership Practices Inventory 360 degree feedback, each manager received one to one feedback and identified for themselves where they were strong and where they needed to make changes. Focusing on specific leadership behaviours they could take practical action in their own parts of the organisation. This was a big investment in time but it really made the difference.
“Through exercises in the workshops, we talk about creating a shared vision and how we can go about doing that. We work with them in groups to make it real for them,” said Isobel Rimmer, lead consultant on the programme. “We put a lot of pressure on people to do what they say they’re going to do in terms of improving their management performance. If they don’t do it, the responsibility is no one else’s – that message is driven home very firmly.”
Working in cross functional groups, the senior management and middle management teams then took part in a series of leadership workshops where they identified the skills, behaviours and practices that needed to be applied.
Read more about how Masterclass worked with the West Yorkshire Probation Service to help probation officers deal with change, cope with the stress of their work and significantly reduce the amount of stress related sickness absence.

The inspiring video – Historia de un Letrero – was a prize winner at the Cannes Film Festival. Don’t worry you don’t have to be fluent in Spanish to understand this beautiful film made in Mexico. Brad has worked as an executive coach since the mid nineties, when as Director of Training he helped launch the NHS Clinical Governance Programme in the South East of England.
A love of personal and professional development has helped him to design and deliver more than 50 different types of programmes over the last five years including the introduction of the Performance Analysis System to the world of Professional Football. This Group and One to One Mental Fitness Coaching Programme has been delivered to both Premiership and Championship Footballers and Football Clubs alike, with the exceptional results achieved being reported in national newspapers.
